About Within the series' narrative, Martha begins as a medical student who becomes the Doctor's time travelling companion after an incident at the hospital where she works. After well over a year of service at his side, Martha parts from the Doctor's company as she cannot bear her own unrequited love for him. After returning to life on Earth, becoming engaged and finishing her medical degree, Martha finds a newfound level of independence when she is recruited into the paranormal military organizations UNIT, and briefly Torchwood. Having faced the end of the world single-handedly during her time with the Doctor, Martha is recognized for her skills both in the field and in medicine.

Tainted Martha moved to Franklin Springs after UNIT discovered strange things going on there. People from all different time periods and worlds were showing up. She moved there some time after she helped out at Torchwood and before she was seen in series four of Doctor Who. She is still engaged to Tom and he remembers what happened during the year that never was.

She is currently mad at the Doctor as she found out he is sleeping with the Master and letting him roam around freely. She doesn’t trust the Master after everything that he did to her and her family as well as the world. She is also working at the local hospital in the ER.

Under The Rainbow Martha ends up there after the events of “Journey‘s End.” After Jack offers her a position at Torchwood she leaves to pick up a few things before making Cardiff her permanent home. On her way back to Cardiff and the Torchwood hub she gets picked up by some sort of tornado which brings her to a parallel world.
